Workshops on Neopoet are groups that meet for a certain period of time to focus on a certain aspect of poetry. Each workshop participant is asked to critique all the other poems submitted into a workshop. A workshop leader helps coordinate -- they set the agenda, give participants feedback on whether their submissions and critique are at they level expected of them, and after the workshop is over, give feedback to participants.
To join a workshop, first find one that is of interest to you. Once you have found the right workshop (and verified that it is open -- you can find this out in the description below), you can apply to join the workshop.

do your Sony headphones have
a built in microphone or are you using the laptop's microphone?
Make sure you are using the mic in the headphones, if you are using the mic in the laptop it would explain the lack of clarity as extraneous noises will be recorded.
The way to check is: look at bottom right of screen on the Task Bar. There is an icon that looks like a speaker. Right click, click on recording devices and make sure the microphone in your headset is selected. You have to click "Set Default" to make sure it stays there.
If this doesn't fix it we need to talk in Neopoet chat or free on Skype to go through it systematically,

Jess

Let's make a Time Zone compatible time to chat on Skype or Neopoet chat about this.

There a many people on Neopoet who don't even know the basics
"Copy and paste" is essential when giving critique, you need to be able to quote text from the poem without spending the time re-typing and (almost certainly) making mistakes. If anyone knows anyone else who does not seem to have these skills please recommend this workshop to them. Stan was the biggest culprit though he may have taught himself by now. Others might be embarrassed to admit they don't have these basic skills, please encourage them to join.
Wesley, I will get to Advanced formatting but would rather cover basic skills first. Even you might learn a thing or too.

On the iPad, this was also a problem. It seems to have gotten better. I posted a profile tonight and it came out right for a first. It's didn't rotate to the right or left like it has done. Not sure why. Maybe it's the pic size or something, not sure. It also didn't need that cropping, moving and sizing like bc.

Straight to Advanced formatiing.
The most common mistake is to type in your comment then convert to Advanced formatting. This results in double spacing. If you type your comment first then select the whole text, cut it (Ctrl X) then convert to Advanced formatting and paste the text back in (Ctrl V) the problem is averted. When starting a new sentence press perod as usual however if you press Enter you will get double space like a new paragraph. Use Shift/Enter to just make a line break or your poems will be double length!

More Advanced Formatting
The most common format you will use is Bold. This eliminates the time and errors involved in retyping stressed feet in caps whilst parsing. Select the syllable and just hit Ctrl B. The same works for italics. Ctrl I, but is much more rarely used.
You notice I use keyboard shorts cuts. You can also use right-click-copy, right click paste or even File>Edit>Copy, File>Edit paste. But learn the keyboard short-cuts. Much faster and less room for error.
Most of the tool icons at the top of the Advanced Formatting pane are seldom used. Who uses strike-though? Undow is again better as a shortcut Ctrl Z. Adding a link doesn't require a button. Just paste in the URL from the page you wish to link to. It still works as a link- https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=copy+and+paste+for+beginners
This is one for those of you who are unaware how much time you are are wasting and mistakes you are making by re-typing. Hint hint untidy writer, by another name so sweet.
The "Paste from word" icon is now largely obsolete as Word now pasted into Neopoet with few problems.
The 'Erasor' icon is replaced by Ctrl Z (undo).
The icon that is an ab with an arrrow to ab is an oblsolte replace buttton.
To turn on spell-cheking varies from Browser to Browder but look an 'Tools', Options' and 'Preferences' and you will eventuall find it. NB Almost no spellcheckers check spelling in titles, so spell carefully there.Forget the teaser icon, Neopoet does it for you.
This leaves us with formatting. Tabs work, ad spaces works however there are no advanced formating functions in Avanced formatting. Please correct me if I am wrong. For 'concrete' or 'shaped' poems you can use Notepad-
a so sad poem saved with the I
a

Enjoyable and much needed technology info.
Jess you've gotten on me many times about not using my laptop bc I use my iPhone and iPad for all my internet submissions and formatting can be challenging at times; it's a problem for some but a gift for me. Now I got something to troubleshoot and suggest Apple, Microsoft and Google/android to make a fix or improvement for.
Mobile devices are not always supported on all websites though they're getting there quickly.
I'm so hard headed I insist on websites I use to moved into the mobile technology world. Being an technician the eat sleep technology troubleshooting I've made a lots progress with Microsoft, Google and Apple. Now they are sending fixes and improvements to systems I work on for my personal use.
I got Microsoft to make their system work similar to iOS bc I wanted my one note and word to work interchangeably with my laptop so I could write poetry to Neopoet at home or on the go. They complied. I helping them make their surface pro the new tablet/laptop of the future. I see Apple iPad pro trying to replace surface but I don't want that so I'm not telling them what I suggest Microsoft do to grab attention of die hard Apple customers like me. Apple need to focus on the watch. I have a lot of ideas Fitbit and the others won't be able to compete with.
I know I'm over everybody head with this; I'm sharing bc I want everybody here to be able to use any device especially mobile to make members on this workshop poetry experience awesome and Jess info easy to use from any device.

Remember Vocaroo recordings are not archival. If you want your recordings more permanent go to Soundcloud.
Love the poem, and hearing your voice!
I wish more people would record their works for us on Neopoet.
cheers,
Jess

Now concrete poetry is another thing.
I don't like it and regard it as reducing the form, unless used in a sculptural context.
Concrete poetry is poetry that depends for part of its meaning on advanced formatting eg each stanza is shaped liked a geometric form or even the formatting creates individual words. I really don't intend to deal with that here, it is for poets working in real space, as I do at times myself, with my animated work.
However it would be nice to just apply an indent, right-formatting, or centering (if you are writing Hallmark cards rather than poetry) or other simple/advanced formatting to a poem sometimes. If you look at the options in Advanced formatting they are Strike Through (why the fuck would you use that?), Undo, which is also Ctrl Z and seldom useful unless you have made a consistent error that continues through a long work, Link, which works just by pasting a link anyway, Unlink, Paste from Word, which varies in usefulness depending on which version of Word you are using and I find works better without Advanced formatting turned on. Remove Format, could be useful. Replace is a useful search function if for example one has consistentently mis-spelled a word or want to replace a regularly used word with another. Check Spelling I just realised is necessary because auto-spell check is turned off with Advanced formatting. Separate the body and teaser of this thread, this could be useful if you are unhappy with the segment of your poem shown as teaser on the Stream.
Now Indenting.
I just put in a tab however the next line reverts
See? I recommend experimenting with formatting in Word or another word processor and copy and pasting into Neopoet with Advanced Formatting turned on and off, and using the Paste from word function.
Generally my advice would be to compose, save and backup on a computer before ever posting to Neopoet. If forced to use a phone or other mobile device send a backup somewhere you can work on it on a proper computer or learn to do everything on a mobile device and teach us all here, please.
Any questions?
cheers,
Jess

Sorry I've not been around.
Sorry I've not been around. My son is recovering from a really bad accident. The profile pic is my car. He jump three lanes of highway, flew through the air flipping over and over bf landing in a ditch upside down.
Jess, thanks for the confidence in me, I'll try to read and answer what I can. I've tinkered with vocaroo; it's a fine piece of software; the capability to save or archive is an issue for me. I would get technical and send suggestions to vocaroo to add those features. I have Soundcloud on my Apple devices and record poetry to them. I like google drive, though it's complicated; I used it interchangeably with my laptop and Apple devices.
Jess I see you got questions and answers well covered; I can help with any using phones and tablets to submit poetry if they need or want it. I maybe so technical I may not be of benefit. If that's the case, let me know so I can adjust my approach.

spoken word
I think I have my account set up on sound cloud. The question I have is whether I need a mic or can I just speak into the computer. I figure that some folk might be having problems with vermin and a recording of my voice would likely drive off all pests lol...........stan

You don't know if you need a mike
or can just speak to the computer?
Stan it amazes me you can find the 'On' Button.
If you are using a laptop chances are there is a built in microphone, but quality will always be better using microphone/headset.
Post some examples of your Soundcloud work and let's hear for ourselves, ok?
cheers,
Jess

Don't
some comps have built in mics? The one I'm using is less than a year old apple desk top. Also why should I use headset? I can understand the mic but why the headset.

Headset greatly improves sound quality
by having the mic close to your mouth, usually a better quality mic, and removing feedback and background noises. Also the mic stays the same distance from your mouth helping to maintain consistent levels.
Desk top or laptop? Either way there is a good chance it has a mic but I don't know how to find and activate it on an Apple.

Jess
